Hollywood was laid out in the 1920s boom as a planned city — the circle downtown, the wide boulevards, the grid running from the lakes out to the ocean — and a remarkable amount of what went in the ground then is still in the ground now. In Hollywood Lakes and the blocks around downtown the houses are original bungalows and Mediterranean-revival homes with galvanized supply and cast-iron or clay drains, shaded by trees that have had a hundred years to find the joints in a sewer lateral. The symptoms are consistent: pressure that reaches the front of the house and fades at the back, rust in the water after the place sits, and a main line that backs up on a rhythm rather than by accident.
East of the Intracoastal is the other Hollywood. Because the line has a defect that groundwater finds. In the older parts of Hollywood the laterals are clay or early cast iron with joints that have opened, and when the water table rises, groundwater runs into the line and it can no longer take what the house sends it.
